Classic: Old Caz

The Grasshopper Adventure Series has been offering the chance to challenge yourself with a group of kindred spirits for over 20 years, and the Old Caz route has been one of the foundations of that series. Dancing back and forth between redwood-lined fire roads and winding backroads with just a touch of smooth tarmac, the Old Caz route truly will give you a West County experience.

There are several spots where you can fill bottles and grab a snack on this route. You’ll pass through Duncan Mills on the way out (mile 16) and back (mile 37), and Gold Coast Coffee and Bakery has a back patio where you feast on pastries while keeping an eye on your bikes. Cazadero General Store (mile 30) can also fulfill your caloric needs and is a quaint, rural mom-and-pop establishment.

Local’s-only tip: in December Cazadero hosts the Cazadero Holiday Parade. To transform the tiny town into a winter wonderland, the locals cover the road with a thick layer of white foam. If you’re lucky enough to ride through that weekend you’ll find the roads a bit slippery, but it also makes for a surreal and cheerful experience.
